Celebrating a 142-year friendship

1 October 2021

Sunday October 3, 2021 will mark the 142nd anniversary of the first football match played by a team calling themselves Doncaster Rovers.

A few months earlier, in September 1879, a football match took place between a group of railway workers from the Great Northern Railway Service – led by Albert Jenkins – and a team of students from the Doncaster School for the Deaf.

This match ended 4-4 and, on the way back into town, Jenkins and his team-mates decided to start a football club: Doncaster Rovers.

To celebrate the anniversary of that historic match between Jenkins’ men and the Doncaster School for the Deaf, Rovers have invited children from the school to attend Saturday’s match and take penalties on the pitch at half-time.

Students Ralph, Plamen, Seth and Kiera will also be helping to deliver the matchday team news on social media and the big screen.

Club Doncaster make up part of the Doncaster Deaf Trust's Super 10 - learn more about that here.
